A: It is an area where the dark surface has worn away and repaied repaired at some point in the bowl's long life, leaving lighter, reddish wood visible. It is stable and shown clearly in the photos. We have not tried to hide or refinish it, since it is part of the piece's age and history.

A: The dark tone is part of the bowl's surface as it came to us, and we haven't refinished it. We can't say whether it comes from age, handling, oils or smoke, so we describe it simply as a deep, aged patina. The ridged texture underneath is the lathe work of the original maker.
