Pair of Vintage Black Clay Mythological Sirens

| /

A whimsical and surreal pair of mythological figures from San Bartolo Coyotepec, Oaxaca. Crafted from the region's famous Barro Negro (Black Clay), these sculptures depict winged Sirenas (mermaids) or angels with curved, fish-like bodies. The deep, metallic black finish is achieved not through glaze, but by hand-burnishing the clay with a quartz stone before firing it in a reduction kiln. The tails are intricately detailed with hand-incised diamond patterns and scales, showcasing the playful yet skilled artistry typical of Mexican folk surrealism.
These Oaxacan clay figures are exceptional conversation starters that inject personality and history into "Global Eclectic" or "Bohemian" interiors. Their unique silhouette—half angel, half mermaid—makes them perfect sculptural accents for a curated bookshelf or floating shelf.
