Large Original Senufo Ceremonial Mask

An original African carved mask originally featured in the tradition of Senufo masquerade performances which originated in West Africa. The use of raffia-fringed face masks, capes, and full-body outfits by male performers in these performances is a significant part of Senufo culture and has been a popular form of entertainment for many years. One of the interesting aspects of Senufo masquerade performances is the way in which they pay homage to the importance of women through the use of feminine dance movements. This is a unique feature of the tradition and underscores the vital role that women play in Senufo society. This antique Senufo mask is carved from a native hardwood and features a rich brown wax finish. This large African historical artifact is decorated with natural fiber facial hair and have abstract facial expressions. The mask has star shaped eyes with a petite nose and geometric elements.
