Diamond Motif Bamana African Carved Door

Hand-carved from a single length of hardwood, this door continues the geometric tradition of Mali's Dogon and Bamana granary and house doors — a dense diamond lattice pattern covers most of the panel, each diamond framed by fine diagonal hatching that radiates outward like a sunburst, bordered above and below by narrow molded ridges. A carved lug at the upper left marks where the door once fit its frame. The lower portion of the panel carries a warmer, reddish-toned patina distinct from the grayer wood tone above — consistent with the kind of staining that develops when the base of a door sits in direct contact with earthen thresholds and laterite soil over decades of use, rather than an applied pigment. Genuine age shows throughout: fine cracks run with the grain, the surface carries scattered dark marks consistent with old insect activity, and the wood has the deep, uneven patina of a piece that spent decades in active use before coming to the showroom.

Mounted on its custom stand, the door's dense, symmetrical lattice reads as strong graphic pattern from across a room — well suited to anchoring a hallway, entry, or reading nook.

Antique Dogon or Bamana carved door from Mali with a dense diamond lattice pattern and natural ground-contact patina. Genuine antique wear, mounted on a custom stand.

Q: Can you display more than one antique African door together in the same room?
A: Yes — because these doors are typically shown as freestanding sculptural pieces rather than installed as functioning doors, they group well. Mixing carving traditions (a geometric Dogon or Bamana pattern alongside a more figural Yoruba or Igbo piece, for example) reads as a curated collection rather than a mismatched set, especially when each piece has its own stand and enough breathing room to be appreciated individually rather than crowded edge to edge.
