Attributed to the late 19th to early 20th century (circa 1890s–1920s), this authentic 67-inch architectural compound door (Uzo Ozo) is a masterwork from the Uke / Awka carving traditions of the Igbo people in Southeastern Nigeria. Commissioned by high-ranking Ozo title elders to front a prestige family compound or meeting house, the door features a refined sacred geometric composition. The face centers on large concentric solar target disks (Anya Anwu / Eye of the Sun) set within diamond fields of dense parallel Ichi striations, framed at the top and bottom by rhythmic scalloped crescent arches.

Constructed from two thick planks of dense indigenous African hardwood, the panels are bound along the center seam with original hand-forged blacksmith iron staples and retain a massive carved upper architectural pivot lug. The timber exhibits a warm honey-cedar patina enriched with historic traces of sacred red camwood powder (uhie) preserved within the grain and joinery line. Measuring 67 inches tall by 35 inches wide, its graphic presence and preserved joinery make it an exceptional collector-grade centerpiece for luxury interiors and curated global collections.

Q: What do the concentric circles and scalloped arches on this Igbo door symbolize?
A: The concentric circles represent the Anya Anwu (Eye of the Sun), symbolizing supreme divine light and cosmic vision in Igbo cosmology. Combined with dense Ichi striations (signifying high noble Ozo title rank) and scalloped lunar crescent borders, the door served as a sacred threshold invoking solar blessings and protection over the family compound.
