Sweeping red-orange grain fills the sliding doors of this tansu, each panel framed in black with a round recessed pull. Below them, the drawer fronts have settled into a deep red-brown, softened at the edges, with arched iron pulls and lock plates, and a small door at one side holds bold iron strap hinges. Two pieces stack into one tall chest, and iron handles on the sides let each be lifted and carried. Tansu like this were made in Japan as household storage chests.

At 36 inches wide and 17.5 inches deep, this antique Japanese chest-on-chest stands 65.5 inches tall, so it takes little floor and gives a lot of storage. Use it as one tall chest in a bedroom, an entry or a dining room, or split it into a drawer chest and a low sliding-door cabinet for two different walls. The red grain gives a plain room a clear point of color, and the iron keeps it grounded.
