Standing at an impressive 54 inches, The Horned Guardian is a monumental 19th-century ceremonial mask originating from the Bwa people of Burkina Faso. Hand-carved from a single, heavy block of indigenous wood, this artifact features the iconic elongated horns and bold, polychrome geometric patterns—diamond and chevron motifs—painted in traditional earth-toned pigments of charcoal and kaolin clay white.
This mask is a significant architectural totem, traditionally used in agricultural and celebratory rituals. Its surface tells the story of its long history; the weathered, matte finish and deliberate hand-carved "Wabi-Sabi" character reflect decades of ritual use. The substantial scale and rhythmic verticality of this piece make it a commanding focal point for Modern Safari or Primitive interiors. As an authentic antique artifact, this piece displays significant signs of age and ceremonial wear. There are visible broken fragments along the edges of the carvings, natural wood "checking" (stable cracks), and areas of pigment loss that attest to its history and authenticity. These imperfections are not considered defects but are essential markers of its tribal provenance.
Best displayed as a standalone sculpture on a custom mount or as a dominant wall installation in a grand entryway. Its earthy palette and primitive form provide a grounding contrast to clean, modern lines.
This is a heavy, solid wood artifact. For wall mounting, we recommend professional installation using heavy-duty brackets. To preserve the original natural pigments and prevent further wood movement, keep the piece away from direct sunlight and moisture.
