Antique Ethiopian Harari Round Stool (Trade)

This lovelyl 16-inch high stool originates from the Harar region of Eastern Ethiopia. In the ancient walled city of Harar and the surrounding highlands, these stools—known as boroti—were prized household items, often used by elders or as seating within the traditional Gidir Gar (great house). Carved from a single, solid block of indigenous hardwood, their design is a testament to the refined, minimalist aesthetic of the Horn of Africa, where functional objects are treated as enduring pieces of architectural art. The stool features a deeply "dished" or concave circular seat, designed for ergonomic comfort and stability. Its most striking feature is the structural "cage" of twelve slender, hand-carved pillars that support the seat, creating a rhythmic verticality and a sophisticated play of negative space. The wood has aged to a rich, aged brown patina with an authentic "user sheen" on the seat and base, earned from generations of handling and traditional use. The robust circular base mirrors the seat, providing a perfectly balanced, symmetrical silhouette.

With its 14-inch width and 16-inch height, this stool is a masterclass in organic sculptural design. It serves as an ideal side table for a low-slung lounge chair, a unique pedestal for an art book, or a textured accent in a primary bath. The "Modern Primitive" aesthetic of the Ethiopian highlands makes it a seamless fit for a Japandi interior. Position it where its vertical pillars can catch the light, allowing the architectural "see-through" design to add depth and soul to a minimalist setting.
