Tribal Bold Chevron Mali Antique Door

Hand-carved from a single plank of hardwood, this door presents a clean, confident take on Mali's Dogon and Bamana geometric tradition — straight diagonal chevron lines converge from all four corners to form a bold X across the full panel, evenly spaced and cleanly cut. A small carved tab at the top marks where the door once fit its frame, alongside a small drilled hole nearby. Compared to some of the more heavily worn pieces in this collection, the carving here remains notably crisp and well-defined, with a moderate, evenly built patina rather than the deep softening seen on older examples — pointing toward a mid-rather-than-early 20th century date.

The reverse is left plain and naturally weathered. Mounted on its custom stand, the door's bold, graphic X composition and well-preserved carving give it a clean, almost architectural presence — well suited to a minimal or contemporary space looking for a single confident statement piece.

Q: Does a door with crisper, less worn carving mean it's less authentic or valuable than a heavily weathered one?
A: Not necessarily — carving crispness mainly reflects how a piece was stored and handled, not automatically its age or authenticity. A door kept indoors or replaced within a compound sooner may retain sharper carved lines than a much older piece exposed to decades of harsh weather and use. Collectors generally weigh crispness alongside patina depth, wood density, and overall proportions rather than treating wear alone as the primary marker of value.
