From the Bandiagara escarpment region of Mali, this monumental Dogon door is carved in four narrative registers, each filled with a row of standing ancestor figures shown in the traditional devotional pose, hands drawn up to the chin. This repeated ancestor-figure composition is a hallmark of significant Dogon doors, connecting the piece to broader Dogon cosmological and ancestral veneration practices. Each register is framed above and below by carved geometric bands of hatched chevron pattern. The door retains its original anthropomorphic wood lock mechanism, mounted along the hinge post, a rare survival on a door of this scale. The carving wears a deep, aged, semi-oxidized patina consistent with age. Please note: door may show wear consistent with age, including cracks and other blemishes.
