A long, shallow relief of a Chinese garden, carved in deep layers and finished in black with coppery highlights on the raised edges. Figures gather beneath willow and fruit trees, a small arched bridge crosses toward a pagoda in the distance, and at the far right a round opening frames two more figures. The depth is what holds your eye: leaves, robes and rooftops sit at different heights, so the scene changes as the light moves across it.

A frame of raw, pale wood surrounds the dark panel and sets it off cleanly. At 54 inches wide and under 17 inches high, it is a horizontal piece made for the wall above a sofa, a console, a bed or a mantel. It also leans well on a deep shelf or a sideboard. Pair it with plain plaster or a soft neutral wall and let the carving carry the room.

Q&A
1. What is a moon gate in a Chinese garden scene?
A moon gate is a round opening in a garden wall, used as a doorway or a frame for a view. In carved scenes it often appears as a circle at one side, framing a figure or a distant detail. It is one of the most recognizable elements of Chinese garden design.
2. Where can a long carved wall panel hang?
A panel 54 inches wide works above a sofa, a console, a bed or a mantel, usually centered and a hand's width above the furniture. It also leans well on a deep shelf. Because the piece is horizontal, it suits walls that need width rather than height.
