Antique Wedding Phulkari Pillows | Hand-Embroidered Punjabi Heritage
The Art of Phulkari: Embroidering the Garden of the Soul
Originating from the Punjab region, Phulkari—literally translating to "flower work"—is a sacred textile tradition where every stitch is a prayer. These pillows are repurposed from Antique Wedding Shawls, or Bagh Phulkaris, which were traditionally embroidered by grandmothers and mothers for a bride’s dowry.
The brilliance of these pieces comes from the use of Pat (un-twisted silk thread) embroidered onto Khaddar (hand-loomed cotton). Artisans utilize a darning stitch from the reverse side of the fabric, meaning the complex geometric patterns are created entirely by counting the threads of the weave. This results in a luminous, silk-covered surface that reflects light differently from every angle, creating a jewel-like effect.
Historically, a Phulkari was more than a garment; it was a family record. The vibrant oranges, deep ochres, and madder reds symbolize prosperity and fertility. By bringing these 19th and early 20th-century textiles into the home as pillows, we preserve the history of the women who spent years completing a single shawl. Each piece celebrates the "perfect imperfections" of hand-dyeing and village life, offering a tactile connection to a tradition of love and celebration.
