Large Mediterranean Terracotta Glazed Rim Floor Vase

A monumental piece of Mediterranean daily life, this large storage jar often associated with the Biot region of France or Spanish olive oil production, was built to hold oil, olives, or grains. The jar features distinct horizontal ridges or "turning rings," which are the fingerprints of the artisan who threw this massive piece of clay on a wheel. The rim is dipped in a glossy mustard yellow glaze, a practical detail designed to seal the mouth of the jar where a lid would sit. The body remains unglazed, showcasing the warm, ruddy hue of the sun-baked earth. It is the ideal architectural element to fill an empty corner in a living room or to flank a grand front door.
