Discover the exquisite craftsmanship of the Nupe people in Nigeria with this antique water or palm wine vessel, a testament to their deep connection with the natural world. Inspired by the organic shape of a gourd, Nupe ceramicists meticulously crafted this vessel. Its diverse textures and colors stem from its original purpose. Every dimple and geometric marking, carefully engraved, not only enhanced the vessel's grip but also created a hand-worn texture and off-colored streaks, adding character and charm.
Designed with practicality in mind, the rounded bottom allowed this antique pottery vessel to rest on a half-buried support inside a Nupe house, often stacked among others of its kind. Evidence of its history is visible in the subtle wear around the inside of the top rim, indicating its frequent use and placement.
