She wears a blue robe scattered with white blossoms and birds, with embroidered cuffs of green, yellow and red. The boy sits against her in a green silk jacket with red sleeves, his hair tied in two small buns, and holds the page with a steady hand. This double portrait is painted in reverse on glass in the manner of the Canton export studios of southern China, set against a deep navy ground that was laid in last and shows its brushwork. A black shape at the lower right marks the edge of a chair or table.

Measuring 16 inches tall in a dark wood frame carved with a key-fret border and fitted with a brass hanger, it hangs in a bedroom, a nursery, a study or a hallway, or stands on a shelf or console. A child shown with a book points to the hope of learning and scholarly success, a goal families held for their sons.

Q: Can a small Chinese glass painting anchor a gallery wall?
A: Yes. A carved dark frame and a deep blue ground give a small painting enough weight to sit at the center of a grouping. Surround it with lighter frames and keep the spacing even.

**Please bear in mind that colors of products shown may vary slightly from their original color due to monitor display settings or photography studio

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0288/5256/files/0781_SereneLivingRoomwithAntiquePortrait.png?v=1793826763
